Now Blind people can be more independent thanks to augmented Reality
Scientists from the Universidad
Politécnica de Madrid (polytechnic university of Madrid) have developed a technology based on
augmented reality that helps the blind. This innovation called e-glance is a
big upgrade in the field of the Typhlotechnology.
How augmented reality
can reduce blind people dependency on others?
Spanish researchers
have used augmented reality to create e-Glance. It is a technology that allows
creating a virtual map of the nearby areas which is transmitted to the blind
person through the mobile phone, making it not only depend on the cane or the
ear to know their environment.
The application of
e-Glance is not limited to the home, it can also be used in the workplace.
It is achieved, in this way the productivity of the blind people in the work is facilitated. Other possible options are places of lodging, shopping
centers or transport vehicles such as the train.
How e-Glance augmented reality
works with ?
The system presented
by Spanish scientists seeks to adapt technological advances so that they can be
used by people with blindness or visual impairment. It is for this reason that
the study embarks on Typhlotechnology, which is the science that studies the
techniques and resources necessary to improve the integration of the blind.
Other examples of
augmented reality that can help the blind:-
In addition to the
e-Glance program promoted by the UPM, other universities around the world are
developing technologies based on augmented reality to improve the lives of the
blind. One of the most interesting studies is carried out by Philip Torr and
Stephen Hicks (both from Oxford). These scientists have created smart glasses,
which detect the visual deficiencies of a person and adjust the image to
improve their vision. This innovation is possible thanks to cameras that
collect information about the scene in front and a complex algorithm system
that analyzes the data received by the viewers. The exaggeration of certain
details or the enhancement of the contrast manage to highlight the obstacles
and allow the user to noticeably improve his vision.
