Augmented Reality: The Undercover Life Changer

“Augmented reality will be an essential part of your daily life, like the iPhone”

Tim Cook (CEO of Apple)

What if I told you that Augmented Reality is going to impact your life greatly? Would you look at me with a frown or would you be willing to hear me out?

If you will frown at me, give me a chance to change your mind and continue reading;
If you are willing to hear me out, then you came to the right blog!

What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented reality combines digital information with a user’s environment in real time. In other words, it is just an expansion of what’s already in front of you.

For example, if you ever bought a clothing item that you do not want to try on, AR will do it for you and portray it as if you are looking into the mirror.

Types of Augmented Reality

Marker Based AR

Introduced almost a decade ago, augmented reality markers are visual signals with ‘markers’ or optical squares that aid in the digital translation of information to a digital device.

Marker-Less AR

Better known as a location or position-based AR. Marker-less AR does not require any recognition system for the translation of information.
Marker-less AR uses location tools and other aids like orientation. The location tools vary from GPS, digital compass, velocity meter and accelerometer.

Projection-Based AR

From its name, projection augmented reality projects in the sense that lights from a device is projected on objects. The reflection of light on the surface allows interaction through the aid of sensors.

For example, picture reflecting your phone’s keypad onto the surface of your hand, you can dial the number you want by pressing the reflected numbers on your palm.

Superimposition-Based AR

In this type of Augmented Reality, we augment the natural view with a view of object (such as furniture), just to see how the object will look like in real life without having to move the object. This technique depends on “object detection” where a software is able to detect an object in a picture.

For example, you can project a bed or a sofa in your bedroom just by having a photo without having to buy from furniture shop or move it and you will be able to try more options.

….so now that you saw briefly how augmented reality really works and the power it plays in changing our lives please stay tuned for the second blog which will be dissecting Augmented Reality even further!
